Elliot Roman

Elliot Roman is a multifaceted composer, pianist, flutist, and conductor. His compositions and arrangements have been performed in four continents and have won prizes in prestigious competitions including the BMI Student Composer Awards. Elliot’s compositions often juxtapose stasis with motion, rich harmony with rhythmic vibrancy, and sincerity with wit. Many of them reflect upon art and identity and often explore the concept of quotation. He has received commissions from ensembles including American String Quartet, the New York Virtuoso Singers, LGT Young Soloists, and the National Orchestral Institute and Festival. In 2021, Elliot founded underStaffed, a collective dedicated to the performance of works for chamber orchestra and small ensembles and serves as its Artistic Director and Conductor. He has premiered works by emerging composers both with underStaffed and in programs such as the Carnegie Hall 2019 “Migrations” Festival. An accomplished flutist on the side, Elliot played both flute and piano in the New York Youth Symphony, performing at Carnegie Hall, on CNN, and on tour in Spain.

Elliot is an up-and-coming figure in the world of Jewish music, serving as the conductor of Bergen County chapter of HaZamir: The International Jewish Teen Choir as well as the pianist for the Zamir Chorale, Zamir Noded, and the Jewish Theological Seminary H.L. Miller Cantorial School choir. He is also currently a Lazar Fellow in the inaugural class of the Jewish Choral Conducting Institute.

Elliot received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Manhattan School of Music, where he was a recipient of the Jay Rubinton Scholarship. www.elliotromanmusic.com
